Fashion Takes Action began in 2007 as a Green Gala fundraiser event in support of Environmental Defence. Featuring ten of Canada’s leading fashion designers, the goal of the Gala was to demonstrate the potential of sustainable fabrics to make high end, evening wear garments – both to the consumer and to the fashion industry.
Due to the success of the inaugural Green Gala, the Fashion Design Council of Canada (FDCC) invited Fashion Takes Action to show at Toronto Fashion Week. This helped to further increase the level of awareness to a “fashion first” audience, while breaking down the stereotypes often associated with “eco” or “green” fashion. After all sustainable fashion is about the fashion first, and should look no different than conventional fashion.
Throughout the production of these events, it became increasingly apparent that there was a need for an organization that was dedicated to sustainable fashion in Canada. And so the research began!
A closer look into sustainable fabrics led to a deeper understanding of the bigger picture: the negative social and environmental impacts created and perpetuated by the fashion industry. Issues such as fair trade and labour, ethical sourcing, water and energy consumption, waste management and dye processes were suddenly more important than what fabric was used to make the garment. This is where we discovered that it is the story behind the garment where one can truly learn how and why it is sustainable.
An intense phase of market research, global networking and strategic relationship building, has formed the foundation that we proudly call our new members based organization.
