Sustainability is quickly turning into a buzz word and one that the media can't get enough of, but what does it really mean to be sustainable and especially in fashion?
Nau is the quintessentially sustainable company to answer that question. From their recycled fabric sourcing, to the 2% charity donation options with purchase, to the pop-up stores that reduce the carbon footprint of having a full-time retail space- this brand has thought sustainability all the way through. I recently had the pleasure of talking with one of Nau’s head designers, Peter Kallen.
Tell me a little bit about the mission of Nau and how it is leading in sustainable fashion?
Well, our whole business model is based on sustainability. Every item in our collection has a considered approach to fabric, construction, and the end of its life cycle. We believe we can do well by doing good. Create a business that reflects more then just the pursuit of dollars, and considers every aspect and impact the product has. Become a change agent for good.
How would you describe sustainable fashion?
We think that there is a great need for fashion that can move seamlessly through your day whether you are going to work or to the mountains to ski or hike. The two worlds of performance and fashion are not mutually exclusive; we are colliding these worlds in a way that can create a wardrobe that functions wonderfully and limits the need for variety of outfits. Sustainable fashion is really about ‘less is more’.
How are you educating and engaging your consumers?
We have a website that we sell our products from, and also our consumers can find information about our beliefs and standards. We have a policy of transparency that we abide by, and realize that the process of being sustainable changes and improves each day, so we must be liquid in the pursuit of being more green. Also, we are big fans of social media and seek out new ways to have conversations with our customer base.

Nau is a brand created by and for sustainability. Be sure to check out their website to see all the great new fashions, and follow their blog to get the inside scoop. This is one brand that is setting the benchmark in sustainable fashion with style!
If you are in the New York area stop by the pop-up store at 69 Mercer Street in Soho until the 31st of December to scoop up some ‘good’ goods.
