First Annual Award

We are excited to announce FTA Design Forward, our first annual award created in recognition of the many talented eco fashion designers in Canada. There are a number of fabulous designers working toward a sustainable fashion future, however we believe that our fourteen nominees represent the driving force of the movement in Canada. Each nominee was hand-selected by FTA based on a set of criteria that we developed. With the assistance of Mary Hanlon at Social Alterations, we were able to filter all the nominees through the criteria, resulting in the 14 we have chosen to feature for the Award.

Every Vote Counts

Over the next few weeks, we invite you to review each nomination (see right hand side bar list), and then vote for your favourite Canadian sustainable fashion designer! The voting will close at midnight on Friday, April 16, 2010.

Each of the profiles we created include images of the designs and how each nominee held up to our criteria. We also included our comments - what we like about each one of them, and where we think there is room for improvements. But its not up to us to decide - its your turn to vote, and every vote counts!

From your votes (maximum one per person), we will take the top three finalists, who will then face our jury made up of recognized leaders with fashion and corporate sustainability backgrounds.

Bamboo Disclaimer

Due to the facts that surround bamboo rayon, FTA has chosen to not include this fabric when determining each of the nominee’s contributions to sustainable fashion. Instead we have chosen to focus only on the fabrics that we think count: organic cotton, hemp, organic wool, ramie, recycled and upcycled fabrics, and the man-made cellulosic fabrics produced in a closed-loop environment, such as Tencel or Modal. We feel that it works against a designer’s sustainable initiatives if they choose to continue working with bamboo, and promoting it as being eco-friendly. For more information, read our article to Be or not to be Bamboo...

"Our Toronto chapter is a proud industry supporter of Fashion Takes Action. We will collaborate again on FTA's annual celebration of eco-friendly couture. Begging us to reconsider the choices we make in our day-to-day lives, FTA's fierce devotion to raising awareness is beyond a fad. Rather, it's an integral direction for our earth's future, and we plan to work closely with them on many levels in 2009".
