Materials Used

Elladora uses the following fabric compositions and blends: 100% Certified Organic Cotton; 58% Soy / 37% Organic Cotton / 5% Spandex; 100% Recycled Cotton; 100% Organic colour grown cotton; Silk; Hemp; 100% Organic Linen; 55% Hemp / 45% Cotton; 60% Organic Cotton / 40% Bamboo.

Prints are done by hand locally in Toronto using water-based dyes. Elladora uses “only organic, reclaimed and recycled fabrics and material to create original, innovative clothing that combines ethics and aesthetics.”

Production

Elladora is aligned with the following fabric suppliers:

  • Atlantis Fabrics (SKAL, CU and GOTS for all processes from growing, spinning, weaving/knitting, drying and printing);
  • Carr Textile (based out of USA, Oeko-Tex standard 100 on dyeing and finishing, SKAL certified, EKO sustainable textile – GOTS certified);
  • Sew Ecological/Green Textiles (certified organic fabrication and processing by Organic Trade Association regulations);
  • Pickering International (work with IMO, Control Union, OCIA, NOP and Ecocert).
All patterns and samples are made in house, and most sewing is done in Toronto. They also use “natural dyes” (homemade dyes from flowers, fruits and vegetable).

No fair trade certification is available.

Design

Vintage inspired designs make these garments appear timeless.

Special Features

Elladora is currently working with local farmers to recycle their unusable produce to make “natural dyes,” which also helps to minimize waste. Their new spring line will include a dress dyed with dandelions.

FTA Comments :

We love that Elladora has done the research on their suppliers in terms of environmental impacts, but we would like to see more information on where the actual fabrics are manufactured. Also, there is little information about how the company is working toward sustainability. We had to do some digging to find the answers (and the answers are great - we just think they need to be communicated better).

We would also like to know what percentage of the materials used are vintage/recycled as it means landfill diversion.

Bamboo Disclaimer

Due to the facts that surround bamboo rayon, FTA has chosen to not include this fabric when determining each of the nominee’s contributions to sustainable fashion. Instead we have chosen to focus only on the fabrics that we think count: organic cotton, hemp, organic wool, ramie, recycled and upcycled fabrics, and the man-made cellulosic fabrics produced in a closed-loop environment, such as Tencel or Modal. We feel that it works against a designer’s sustainable initiatives if they choose to continue working with bamboo, and promoting it as being eco-friendly. For more information, read our article to Be or not to be Bamboo...
