Elroy

Elroy01

Materials Used

Elroy uses the following fabric compositions and blends: 100% Linen; 100% Organic Cotton; 55% Hemp/45 % Tencel; 100% Bamboo; 100% Handwoven Bamboo; 95% Modal/5% Spandex; 100% Bamboo Jersey; 100% Bamboo Knit Jersey; 56% Soy/36% Organic Cotton/8% Spandex; 100% Organic Cotton Canvas; 100% Melton Wool.

Production

Elroy states: “We believe it is more than possible to live in abundance without polluting, consuming natural resources excessively or abusing labour practices...We focus to remain committed and respectful to our environment, our production team and to our clients.”

Elroy's production is done in Indonesia, however they claim “the design, sourcing, materials and manufacturing of our clothing is environmentally conscious and socially responsible […] delivering great quality, sustainable, fairly traded and beautiful clothing.”

There is no fair trade certification scheme.

Design

Elroy emphasizes the concept that garments have a story to be told. This suggests Elroy has linked design to consequence in deeper ways than material and production, in search for larger meaning within sustainability.

Special Features

Elroy has dedicated a section of their website toward consumer education, through the listing of facts about various fibres. The Bamboo fibre facts, however, are outdated which can create some confusion for consumers. (See our bamboo disclaimer on the right, or click above to read more about the eco facts of bamboo).

FTA Comments :

We love the consumer education piece, however we feel there could be more efforts made on the production side in terms of disclosing where the materials are being sourced. Also when making either fair trade or organic claims, we prefer to see a certification scheme in place.

Elroy is committed to empowering their clients to become more aware of their buying power and environmental footprint - and we love that! The emphasis on a garments “story,” is also great, but in this case, we want to hear more of their story.

Bamboo Disclaimer

Due to the facts that surround bamboo rayon, FTA has chosen to not include this fabric when determining each of the nominee’s contributions to sustainable fashion. Instead we have chosen to focus only on the fabrics that we think count: organic cotton, hemp, organic wool, ramie, recycled and upcycled fabrics, and the man-made cellulosic fabrics produced in a closed-loop environment, such as Tencel or Modal. We feel that it works against a designer’s sustainable initiatives if they choose to continue working with bamboo, and promoting it as being eco-friendly. For more information, read our article to Be or not to be Bamboo...
