Materials Used

Laura Chenoweth uses 100% Certified Organic Cotton. All clothing is made with GOTS certified organic cotton grown in India (Global Organic Textile Standard) and non-toxic dyes.

Production

The clothes are designed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and are handcrafted by a small group of artisans in India. Dyeing and production is done in a fourth-generation family-run business in India. All dyes are azo-free, non-toxic and eco-friendly.

Although there is no fair trade certification scheme in place, Laura avers that work conditions and lighting is good, everyone has lunch and chai breaks and all workers have Sundays and religious holidays off. No child labour is involved in any stages of production.

Design

The design philosophy behind Laura Chenoweth seemingly embraces and supports the culture of the artisans in India, without compromising style or comfort for the Canadian market.

The design is quite casual; the clothing is practical and comfortable to wear.

Special Features

Laura Chenoweth has gone the distance to educate her clients in the negative social and environmental impacts of conventional cotton, while explaining that certification of organic cotton is extremely important to assure these negative impacts are not associated with her designs.

She has also referenced organizations that specialize in this area for her customers to refer to if they need more information.

FTA Comments :

Laura Chenoweth has potential to become completely transparent in terms of production in India, if the information was available on her website.  We had to do a bit of digging to get the full story (which is a great one), so it would be nice to see more effort in communicating this clearly on the website.

We love the effort that Laura has made in educating her clientele on the negative impacts of conventional cotton!

Bamboo Disclaimer

Due to the facts that surround bamboo rayon, FTA has chosen to not include this fabric when determining each of the nominee’s contributions to sustainable fashion. Instead we have chosen to focus only on the fabrics that we think count: organic cotton, hemp, organic wool, ramie, recycled and upcycled fabrics, and the man-made cellulosic fabrics produced in a closed-loop environment, such as Tencel or Modal. We feel that it works against a designer’s sustainable initiatives if they choose to continue working with bamboo, and promoting it as being eco-friendly. For more information, read our article to Be or not to be Bamboo...
