Production

“Proudly made in Vancouver, B.C. Canada” is the only information on the website regarding production.

Design

Designs are very feminine, with ruffled sleeve and hem accents, paired with empire waists. Lav & Kush offers practical designs that will likely transcend trends.

Special Features

“A percentage of revenue is directed towards various non-profits” (PETA, World Vision and Imagine1day, the David Suzuki Foundation) through the Lav & Kush Fashion Share Program.

Lav & Kush seems to understand that sustainability is a process, by striving “to use eco-friendly and sustainable materials as much as we can, choosing the earth-friendly alternative to the conventional, constantly researching and learning...we will not claim that we are saving the earth, but we can try. A little bit at a time.”

FTA Comments :

We are impressed that Lav & Kush have taken ownership of what sustainable practices they have implemented, while noting at the same time that they aren't perfect. Becoming fully sustainable is not as easy as it might seem, and it is definitely not something that happens overnight. But taking pride in what steps you are taking is important, and it is even more important that it is communicated in an open and honest way. Sometimes companies are reluctant to be this transparent because they feel they might not be doing as much as their neighbour. But it is far better to be clear and transparent, than to not disclose it at all.

Having said that, we would like to see Lav & Kush using less fabric blends, where the labeling can sometimes be unclear. We were happy to discover that moving forward, Lav & Kush will be using hemp and Tencel, which are each produced sustainably.

It would also be nice to see more information on the website, and a stronger connection between their philosophy of social responsibility, and their materials and production process.

Bamboo Disclaimer

Due to the facts that surround bamboo rayon, FTA has chosen to not include this fabric when determining each of the nominee’s contributions to sustainable fashion. Instead we have chosen to focus only on the fabrics that we think count: organic cotton, hemp, organic wool, ramie, recycled and upcycled fabrics, and the man-made cellulosic fabrics produced in a closed-loop environment, such as Tencel or Modal. We feel that it works against a designer’s sustainable initiatives if they choose to continue working with bamboo, and promoting it as being eco-friendly. For more information, read our article to Be or not to be Bamboo...
