Materials Used

Paper People Clothing uses recycled materials from sweaters, bed sheets, vintage doilies, and curtains. As well as 100% Organic Cotton, Bamboo/Organic Cotton blends, and Soy/Organic Cotton blends. The primary source of materials is second hand clothing (80% made from recycled clothing the other 20% comes from sustainable textiles including organic cotton twill from Telio).

Production

Second hand clothing is purchased from wholesalers in the Toronto area such as Goodwill. 90-95% of the cutting is done in the studio which is Bullfrog Powered. The unusable scraps from production are sorted into different categories and are donated to crafters, artists, quilters and charities to divert waste. The larger scraps are used to make accessories. Sewing is outsourced to a small local company based in Toronto.

Design

Some designs can be worn more than one way. For example, the Reversible Mini Skirt is reversible front to back. Designs come from the innovative repurposing of garments past.

Special Features

Paper People Clothing uses vintage and recycled buttons. Some garments are hand dyed. Their studio is Bullfrog Powered which supports clean, green renewable energy. Their effort to reduce waste by using scraps to make accessories and donating to local artisans should be commended.

FTA Comments :

We love how dedicated Paper People Clothing is to reusing materials - both in their initial designs, and in donating scraps. Landfill diversion is very important and few designers are doing this. We would love to see washing instructions in order to better manage repurposed materials, without compromising the design. Designs are made locally, but certification on the organic fabrics used is not provided (although supplier Telio is disclosed).

Bamboo Disclaimer

Due to the facts that surround bamboo rayon, FTA has chosen to not include this fabric when determining each of the nominee’s contributions to sustainable fashion. Instead we have chosen to focus only on the fabrics that we think count: organic cotton, hemp, organic wool, ramie, recycled and upcycled fabrics, and the man-made cellulosic fabrics produced in a closed-loop environment, such as Tencel or Modal. We feel that it works against a designer’s sustainable initiatives if they choose to continue working with bamboo, and promoting it as being eco-friendly. For more information, read our article to Be or not to be Bamboo...

"True fashion is about non-toxicity. If fashion pollutes, it should no longer be called fashion, it should be called pollution."
