Preloved

Materials Used

Preloved garments are entirely crafted from vintage fabrics, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind.

Their fabric is sourced from various rag houses across the Toronto area. Upcycling vintage fabric reduces the environmental impact because no production of the fabric is required (saving energy, water, effluent) and it also provides the garment with a second life, thus, saving it from its destination landfill.

However, dry clean is often suggested as best form of cleaning.

Production

Designs are produced to code at a manufacturing company in the Toronto area, with some styles manufactured by independently contracted sewers.

Design

Fashion forward designs have been developed through the innovative repurposing of garments past. For example, Serena Dress: “It takes four pairs of vintage trousers to make just one”.

Furthermore, Preloved suggests different ways for the garments to be worn, making them more versatile and longer lasting.

Special Features

Preloved offers a Home Collection and a Kids Collection (me*me).

Label reads “this garment was consciously created from reclaimed fabrics” informing clients on the materials used.

FTA Comments :

We love Preloved's use of upcycled and repurposed fabric, and their unique designs. And we commend them for being one of the first sustainable fashion brands in Canada!

Because of the fact that the suggested care for most garments is dry-clean only, it would be great to suggest some green dry cleaning alternatives. Established in three major international markets, Preloved has the opportunity to partner with local green dry-cleaners in Toronto, Montreal and Sydney.

Because the larger environmental impact often takes place on the user end through laundering, we would like to see Preloved approach "care" the same way they approach the energy savings in material production through the use of upcycling and repurposing fabric.

Bamboo Disclaimer

Due to the facts that surround bamboo rayon, FTA has chosen to not include this fabric when determining each of the nominee’s contributions to sustainable fashion. Instead we have chosen to focus only on the fabrics that we think count: organic cotton, hemp, organic wool, ramie, recycled and upcycled fabrics, and the man-made cellulosic fabrics produced in a closed-loop environment, such as Tencel or Modal. We feel that it works against a designer’s sustainable initiatives if they choose to continue working with bamboo, and promoting it as being eco-friendly. For more information, read our article to Be or not to be Bamboo...
