Materials Used

We were unable to get a breakdown of the fabric compositions and blends used in Salts' Organic Clothing. However, fabrics used include bamboo, organic cotton, hemp and soy. Their organic cotton is certified by the Control Union World Group formally called SKAL, and they also carry GOTS certification.

Production

Salts is designed and sewn in a small Factory in Vancouver, B.C. Materials are sourced from mills in Quebec, San Francisco, and Vancouver. Hemp is sourced from China of which is aligned with a GOTS / EKO Sustainable Textile certification scheme "for the processing of of fibres from certified organic agriculture". Salts also has OE Blended  resp. OE100 standards of The Organic Exchange certification.

Design

Accessories (hats), baby wear, and menswear, in addition to the women’s wear collection. Clothing is comfortable and practical.

Special Features

Salts Organic presents an online learning centre called “learn a bit” where some great information is provided around organics, laundering tips and more. Salts also supports charitable organizations including Oxfam and Pants to Poverty.

FTA Comments :

We like how much of an effort is being made on local production and materials sourced. And we think its great that Salts has taken the time to explain their sustainable fashion philosophy to their customer, both on their website and in their blog.

Bamboo Disclaimer

Due to the facts that surround bamboo rayon, FTA has chosen to not include this fabric when determining each of the nominee’s contributions to sustainable fashion. Instead we have chosen to focus only on the fabrics that we think count: organic cotton, hemp, organic wool, ramie, recycled and upcycled fabrics, and the man-made cellulosic fabrics produced in a closed-loop environment, such as Tencel or Modal. We feel that it works against a designer’s sustainable initiatives if they choose to continue working with bamboo, and promoting it as being eco-friendly. For more information, read our article to Be or not to be Bamboo...
